Hi babes! Last year I vouched to read more as one of my new year’s resolutions… and by read “more” I meant read anything at all 😊 After having V I found myself reading less and less so made an effort to carve time to read in 2020. Little did I know the pandemic would help force that hand a bit with a lot of free-time at home. I wanted to share a recap of the books I read this year and a list of others I have my eye on to be up next. With the winter season/time indoors in full swing and upcoming beach trips on the horizon (fingers crossed for that to happen this year!), I thought some of you may be looking for a good book rec so look no further:
Where the Crawdads Sing – This was one of the first books I read this year and admittedly it started slow, which in hindsight probably wasn’t a good choice since I was trying to get back into reading BUT if you can hang on through the first 1/3rd of the book as they develop the characters it’s absolutely worth the read. The murder mystery started to develop around that spot which is when I was hooked, but the depth of the characters brings so much more to the storyline that classifying this as a murder mystery just doesn’t do it justice. Without giving too much away, the ending is a memorable one, and there’s a reason this one has topped the charts continuously this year.
Bring Me Back – This book is by the same author that wrote Behind Closed Doors which was all I needed to know to add this to my list. Fair warning, I would recommend both of these books but they fall into the psychological thriller category with twisted, suspenseful, dark storylines, so if that’s not your thing read on 😊 Any book or movie in the suspense / thriller category is a yes from me, and this one was no exception. It was a quick read that kept me guessing with an ending that didn’t feel expected.
The Silent Patient – Another psychological thriller on the list, shocker. This one was great, a classic ‘couldn’t put it down’ it was so good. I read this one the fastest of any on the list so would definitely recommend.
Make Life Beautiful – Full disclosure, I’m still reading this one but it’s so, so good. I typically have more books on my list in the personal development category (career, business, etc), but with the weight of the pandemic I found myself reaching for mostly fiction this year 😊 This one is a personal story following the lives of Syd & Shea McGee as they built one of the most successful interior design firms in recent history, Studio McGee. The story is relatable and inspiring, and I love that it focuses on the interior design industry. It’s another one that I haven’t been able to put down, and has been a great book to help motivate me in the new year.
Three Women – This book was wow! A true story about the sex lives of three women which together tell a story about desire and what it means to be a woman. The details the writer was able to draw out makes the stories so much more tangible than your run of the mill ‘true story’ and showcases the quality of reporting. I can’t recommend this one enough!
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – Last but not least… one that many of us have already read, but such a great book. Early in the pandemic someone posted about reading this book and said that it provides good perspective for our cushy ‘lockdown’ situation. I’m all about gaining perspective in challenging times or finding the silver lining so it felt like an appropriate time to dust this one off the shelf.
And lastly, a couple other ones I have my eye on after I finish Make Life Beautiful,
Open Book by Jessica Simpson – I wouldn’t typically reach for this one, but I’ve seen good review after good review so may have to give this one a shot.
Then She Was Gone – Thriller. Sign me up!
I know I’ve missed a ton of other good ones on this list, any other book recs I should check out in the new year? Drop them below in the comments for others to read too. Happy New Year! 😊
